MUSICAL THEATRE PRODUCTION

All the world’s a stage, and students in our Musical Theatre Production classes become more skilled and confident players as they learn the fundamentals of musical theatre, taught by some of the best working professionals in the area.

Students in 3rd-12th grade (divided by age groups) develop a broad range of Musical Theatre skills, including acting, singing, dancing, character development, production design, and much more in weekly classes. To culminate the class experience, students share what they learn in productions in the Leishman Hall and on the Barlow Mainstage at CenterPoint Theatre.

Musical Theatre Production for High School (9TH-12TH GRADE)

Instructors are Danny Inkley, Bailee DeYoung, Jessica Love, Kristina Boler. Matilda performed in December and Crazy For You performed in May in the Leishman Hall. Also perform in the Academy Showcase on the Barlow Mainstage in May. $70 monthly tuition; $50 materials fee; $15 costume fee.

Performing Arts (1ST-2ND Grade)

Through engaging activities that include storytelling, music, stage movement, and creating characters, students explore the foundations and techniques of effective performance in this class designed to give first and second grade students a foundation in the performing arts. The students participate in two in-class performances during the year to round out the meaningful learning experience. Sing, Act, Play offers young students ages 4 through kindergarten an engaging introduction to theatre through drama, music, movement, and visual art. MUSICAL THEATRE TRAINING

Our Musical Theatre training classes are designed as supplements to your participation in Musical Theatre Productions classes, or as stand-alone classes. Your involvement in these classes will help you level up in your knowledge, skills, confidence, and competence as a musical theatre performer.

Musical Theatre Auditioning (GRADES 7TH-12TH)

This is one we hear about all the time, and we’re so excited to offer it. By popular demand, we’re excited to present our Musical Theatre Auditioning Class. Nail every audition with the best training around! This class will focus on learning and perfecting the skills needed to feel confident at a musical theater audition. We will cover everything – creating a resume, headshots, building your audition songbook, making an audition cut, performing your audition piece, nailing readings and monologues, and everything in between. Students will come out of this class prepared for their next audition and with the skills to tackle every audition in their future. Instructors are Lindsea Garside and one other awesome person. $45 monthly tuition; $50 materials fee.

This is a 16-week course, offered once in Fall and once in Spring.

Backstage! (Ages 14-18)

Backstage lets you get your hands on all areas of Musical Theatre by working on the actual mainstage shows at CenterPoint Theatre, directly with the professional staff that make the shows happen. You’ll get a chance to work on set design and construction, lighting design, sound design, building props, sewing costumes, creating awesome theater magic, and becoming proficient and knowledgeable in every part of musical theatre productions. Each week you’ll learn crucial concepts and theory, and apply them in hands-on work putting up CenterPoint’s mainstage productions and CenterPoint Academy’s productions. Safety equipment and supervision will always be provided. Close-toed shoes required every day. Students from this class will be considered first for tech employment on Academy and mainstage shows (must be 16 or older to apply) and will also gain the skills to be employed in other theaters. Even for our students who prefer to spend their time on the stage, learning how a theater actually works will give you an edge, and make you a better performer by making you a better team player. Instructors are Lindsea Garside, Derek Walden, Truxton Moulton, Jana Plowman, Silas Stott, Janell Roundy, Cynthia Klumpp, Danny Inkley. $70 monthly tuition; $50 materials fee; $15 costume fee.

Acting for The Stage

A class where you can focus on acting for the stage. Acting, acting, and only acting. Designed to strengthen your acting chops for any of your theatre endeavors – musical theatre, plays, and anything else. Acting is the one thing that pulls all of theater performance together. Singing, dancing, monologues, scenes, musicals, straight play, all of them demand the basic skill of acting. In this class you’ll learn the fundamentals of acting. You’ll learn how to break down a script and analyze plot structure. You’ll learn the process of dissecting a character to bring it to life. You’ll gain confidence and understanding in your acting abilities through tons of on-your-feet work in monologues and scenes. This is the perfect class for anyone who wants to push their stage acting abilities to the next level. There will be an end of year performance in the Leishman Hall. Instructors are Lindsea Garside and one other awesome person. $45 monthly tuition; $50 materials fee.

This is a 20-week course, offered once from January 6th – April 29th

Additional Performance Opportunities (7TH-12TH GRADE)

The Academy is producing an auditioned musical in Fall 2021 and an auditioned play in Spring 2022 in Leishman Hall. The Fall Production is Little Women, directed by Lindsea Garside, and the Spring play is TBA, directed by TBA! These will be auditioned productions with rehearsal and performance schedules that won’t conflict with your regular Musical Theatre Productions classes. Open to 7th grade and up, these productions will give students additional performance opportunities and the chance to work with incredible production teams on some of our favorite shows. $150 one-time tuition;

Offered once in Fall and once in Spring.

DANCE

Dance for Musical Theatre

Not just tap and Jazz anymore! Our new and improved dance offering provides the best training in all types of dance in a more musical theatre-focused way, and we think you’ll love it!  Classes will be taught in age groups that match our Musical Theatre Productions class ages. Our fantastic instructor Danica Davies will focus on movement for musical theatre, improving your skills and making you a more rounded, more castable performer.  Tap and Jazz will still be a big part of the curriculum, of course, and everything taught will be focused on dancing in your favorite shows. There will be two recitals – one in December/January and one in May. $45 monthly tuition; $50 materials fee; Costume fee – $60 for child size and $70 for adults size.

Group Voice for Musical Theatre

Group Voice for Musical Theatre classes at CenterPoint Academy are designed to help students develop and increase their vocal talent in a group setting. Key elements of vocal production, like pitch, intonation, rhythm, and correct breathing are the focus of weekly sessions. Students will perform in two vocal recitals – one in December and one in May. Instructors are the glorious Mailee Halpin and Ami Swallow. $45 monthly tuition; $50 materials fee.

BALLET

Come and join our incredible Ballet program, lead by Joan Bowles and Sarah Taylor! Detailed, specific instruction is provided to each dancer at every conceivable level, from Pre-Ballet tiny ones to Advanced Ballet for the most seasoned and trained. We even offer Beginning Ballet for Teens, a class designed for older students who didn’t get started young but still want the awesome experience Ballet can offer.

Classes focus on technique, combinations, training, and (at advanced levels) Pointe work, and build strength, flexibility, body placement, musicality, grace, confidence, and stage presence. Ballet classes culminate with a full performance on the CenterPoint Main Stage during the Spring.

Focused Skills I, Point Prep. Mondays 6:30-7:00 PM

Ages 12-18. This once-a-week class for levels Intermediate III-Advanced is in addition to regular classes and is designed to enhance a dancer’s technique in specific skill areas. Each week’s class will focus on a step(s) to help the dancer improve aptitude, method, stamina, and accuracy in that particular movement. $45 monthly tuition; $50 materials fee; costume fee – $60 for child size, $70 for adult size.
