FROM THE DIRECTOR

This show and I go back. Not “way, way back many centuries ago,” but pretty close. At the age of four, I was the most ardent fan of the first high school production in the country directed by my father, quickly memorizing every word and note. I’d go on to appear in various roles in five productions over the next four decades before getting the opportunity to direct what you’re about to see tonight.

My team and I started with a commitment to showcase everything already great about this show: its thousands-year-old story, its sweet themes of Family, Faith, and Forgiveness, and its endlessly catchy score.

We also decided that there was room here to try something new. After countless mountings in our community, we wanted to take advantage of some of the show’s unique features, like the myriad of musical styles (decidedly not ancient Hebraic in nature) and the presence of children. We wanted the sudden introduction of cowboy hats and calypso music to make sense, and we wanted to actively involve the children in the storytelling.

Our solution was to set the show somewhere that: 1) stories are told, 2) children are expected to interact with them, and 3) lots of different cultures, styles, and objects are naturally present. That place? A children’s museum with interactive displays, dress-up costumes, and lots of contrasting displays near one another. In the Museum of History, Art, and Imagination, the story of Joseph isn’t just told – it is experienced! And because the children play along, songs and scenes quickly change styles before shifting to another.

In the end, it is the children who hear and learn the lessons of this story, and it is they who will carry its messages forward. We invite you to join them tonight to “Think it, Want it, Dream it – Then it’s real! You are what you feel!”

Shelby Ferrin – Director

SYNOPSIS

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a story straight from the book of Genesis about a well-dressed dreamer named Joseph. One of twelve brothers, Joseph was the favorite son of Jacob and as such was given a beautiful coat of many colors that was the envy of his brothers and the ultimate undoing of this tight-knit biblical family.

Joseph is sold into slavery and his precious coat torn to shreds and brought before his father in a convincing effort to make Jacob believe that his beloved son was dead. But Joseph’s winning personality, ingenuity, and prognosticating skills provided a fast track to success, winning the trust of the Pharaoh himself and the “maximum promotion” as the second most powerful man in Egypt.
