Newsies is based on the real-life Newsboys’ strike of 1899. The Spanish-American War had just ended and had been a boon for newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer and his paper “The World”. Pulitzer was a new generation of newspaper mogul. He had made his name buying floundering papers and turning them around by eschewing pure information in favor of sensationalism, exposés, and graphic horror. He understood that power came from being able to control how and what people thought, and the war fit perfectly into Pulitzer’s personal brand of News.
Now that the war had ended, circulation plummeted, but Pulitzer (and his competitors like William Randolph Hearst’s The Journal) refused to lower the price-per-paper back to pre-war prices. Leading the Newsboys to strike. Their plight to be treated as legitimate workers sparked others to do the same, and soon they were joined by messengers, factory workers, bootblacks, and seamstresses from New York to Boston, St Louis, and as far away as San Francisco.
The creation of Newsies! The Musical parallels the lessons found in the script. In 1992, Disney released a movie musical based on the Newsboy strike of 1899. It was meant to be a revival of the live-action movie musical, (and starred a young Christian Bale as “Jack”), however the film wasn’t a hit in theatres, and Disney considered it a failure.
Like Pulitzer, they failed to listen to the “little people” – the fans.
Bad marketing meant there wasn’t a strong initial audience, however word of mouth spread and it eventually found its audience. And when it did – they became rabid fans. Schools and youth theatre groups began producing illegal versions of the show and begged Disney for a Broadway version.
Despite having to shut down many productions a year, they felt the initial failure of the theatrical release meant there wasn’t money in a live production. By the time they finally acquiesced and created a stage play, they did so only as a test, and with the thought that it would run for a mere 4 weeks at the Paper-Mill Playhouse in New Jersey. The buzz was immediate. “Fansies” bought out the initial run nearly immediately and Disney knew they might have something. The show was a critical and fan success and on March 29, 2012 it moved to Broadway’s Nederlander theatre.
Newsies is a powerful story. But not merely in the superficial “David vs Goliath” structure, or even in its lessons to see others around us as fellow human beings. The story that has always spoken to me personally is the one behind “Santa Fe”. Too often we see our happiness as somewhere other than where we are. “I’ll be happy when I get that job, that money, that spouse, that house, that family, etc.”. We all do it, we see our “Santa Fe” and yearn for that. Yet in so doing we lose sight of the fact that our Santa Fe may just be around us right now. We forget to see the beauty around us, the ones in our lives right now that love us, the joy and wonder of the life we are currently living.
It is my hope that we all may walk out of this theater a little more like Jack, Katherine, Davey, and Crutchie – realizing some of the incredible blessings in our current lives.
“What’s New York got that Santa Fe aint?”
River City, a small, quiet town in Iowa, is populated with upright common folk bristling with mistrust of the unfamiliar, especially smooth-talking salesmen like Harold Hill. Hill plays on their provincial natures to induce hysteria over the new Pool Hall and drum up support for his own shady venture- a brass band for the local youth.
With the town on board and excited at this new venture, they begin to pay Professor Hill to order instruments and uniforms and in return Harold begins to teach them how to read music by using the “Think System,” in which one only has to think about the notes in order to play them.
Everyone is entranced by this new visitor, everyone but the librarian Marian Paroo. As a music teacher herself, Marian finds Hill’s methods suspect. She begins to search for information that would incriminate him but hesitates upon observing her younger brother’s newfound confidence resulting from Harold’s captivating rouse. Marian and Harold begin spending more time with each other and she soon finds herself falling for the handsome newcomer.
Just as the town is preparing for the much-anticipated ice cream sociable, the sinister rival salesman Charlie Cowell arrives, prepared to expose Harold and get him arrested.
It will take more than a little luck and love for Harold to sweet-talk his way out of this sticky situation as this delightful musical marches across the CenterPoint stage.

Krista Davies
Executive Producer
Krista is grateful to once again work on another production with incredibly dedicated and talented people.
Jared Haddock
Director
A big thanks to Natalie and our 4 sons for letting Dad be gone every night. Also, to Krista, Jan, and the absolutely stunning production staff and crew at CPT, what a beautiful group of immensely talented professionals. CPT roles: Jekyll/Hyde, Radames, Father in Ragtime. Directed CPT’s West Side Story and was recently awarded Utah’s “Director of the Decade” by Broadway World. An award-winning choreographer and director, Jared has created productions seen by millions incl for PBS, Collin Raye, the Las Vegas Stratosphere, LDS Church, and the PCC. Broadway tours: Footloose, Children of Eden, Fame. Dance: World Jazz Congress, Odyssey Dance Theatre. Regional: Joseph and the Technicolor Dream Coat (w/ D. Osmond), The Secret Garden, Big River. Love to Nat and his 4 boys.
Tara Wardle
Music Director
If Tara isn’t music directing on the Barlow Main Stage or music directing CenterPoint Academy kiddos, she is home being a mom to her 4 high-spirited kids. She loves all things music, studio recording, seeing Broadway shows with her husband and reading all the Harry Potter books ten times over.
Matthew Davies
Choreographer
Matthew received his BFA in Musical Theatre from BYU. While there he was a featured soloist and toured with the BYU Young Ambassadors and CDT. For the last five years he has spent his time on Broadway national tours and performing at notorious theaters including Music Theatre Wichita, The Metropolitan Opera, and The MUNY. Matthew is ecstatic to be making his choreographic debut at CPT. This show is dedicated to his dad, who always taught him to “Seize the Day.”
Liz Williams
Stage Manager
Disney’s Newsies was Liz’s favorite musical growing up, so being a part of this production is a dream come true. The story of brotherhood and fighting for what you believe in fills her heart! She would like to dedicate this show to her younger self and those wondering if they should take that next step to stop dreaming of Santa Fe and make it a reality.
Mark Andrus
Stage Manager
“A year is much too long to live without the wonderful community and experience that CenterPoint can bring and I’m thrilled to be back and to be part of the performing arts again. Thank you to my wonderful little family and their care and support. Angie, Westley, Liam, and Abby I love you all so much.”
Carynn Butler
Stage Manager
Carynn loves her husband and her puppies. She likes most books and some movies. Her favorite food is delicious. When she’s not here at the theater, she is usually somewhere else.
Derek Walden
Technical Director/Sound Designer
Derek is happy to oversee all of the technical operations of both the Barlow Mainstage and the Leishman Performance Hall Productions. He’s an alumnus of the Weber State Theater Program.
Graham Whipple
Lighting Designer
Graham is the Assistant Professor of Lighting Design at Utah Valley University and a Utah-based lighting designer who has worked in the Chicago area, the Los Angeles area, and in the Utah Valley. He holds an M.F.A in Theatrical Design and Technology from Northern Illinois University and a B.A in Theatre Arts Studies from Brigham Young University. In addition to lighting design and education, Graham has a background in digital media and media server programming; working on projects around the country from Los Angeles to Washington D.C including theater, television, architecture, and special events.
Jennie
Costume Designer
Jennie has been in the theater for over 30 years. Previous shows at CPT include costuming shows like Jekyll and Hyde, Beauty and the Beast, and Guys and Dolls. Jennie performed as the Witch for Into the Woods and Amanda in Glass Menagerie and has directed shows like The Foreigner, You Can’t Take It With You, and To Kill a Mockingbird. “The theater is a sacred space where you take something from every show. You immerse yourself in the character and usually, whether you like it or not, you leave a part of yourself behind.”
Tammy Coleman
Scenic Charge Artist
Tammy is delighted to be painting for CPT’s Newsies. She majored in art at USU and has taught art at elementary schools, has painted sets for Jr. High and High schools, RMT, and Hopebox theaters. Tammy lives in Centerville and has 5 children, all of which have helped her paint over the years. Thanks to her husband Kim for all the love and support!
Trish Child
Property Manager
As a mother, Trish was already well-versed with finding things for people, locating what’s lost, organizing rooms of chaos, and keeping things in proper places. She loves working alongside her daughter to help tell this story of angry children. Though mothers never get to go on strike, she supports all who fight for better wages and a better world.
Taylor Wilson
Property Manager
Taylor wants to give you “props” … literally. Whether pirates, mermaids, or “lost boys” (including those on strike), she’s a master of ensuring CPT actors have their hands full, tables covered, and their flyers distributed. She’s thrilled to be part of another fantastic show, and encourages you to seize the day, & give yourself “props” every now & then.
