Welcome to the glamorous world of 1930s Europe and a little shop where romance floats in the air like a mist of perfume!
If tonight is your first exposure to, She Loves Me, you are in for a treat. Theatre historians consider it among the best-written book musicals of all time. Its message is sweet but slight, and as such, it tends to get overlooked when compared to its flashier or weightier peers from Broadway’s Golden Age, but for my money, pound-for-pound, She Loves Me is every bit as finely crafted as Fiddler on the Roof or Hello, Dolly!
The musical first appeared on Broadway in 1963 to critical acclaim but had its start much earlier as the play Parfumerie by Hungarian playwright Miklos Laszlo. It was subsequently turned into the 1940 film The Shop Around the Corner starring Jimmy Stewart, followed by the 1949 musical film In the Good Old Summertime with Judy Garland. In 1998 it surfaced yet again as the film You’ve Got Mail starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Over the decades audiences have been charmed by this story of feuding anonymous pen pals who do not realize they are lovers until the very end.
There are many musicals that exist purely as diversions and superficial entertainment, but She Loves Me has both sweetness and genuine substance. If Mamma Mia! is cotton candy, She Loves Me is a fine confection, a ganache-covered chocolate with hints of honey and rose, something meant to be savored from beginning to end. Its impact is still a “sugar rush,” but the journey there is entirely different.
Tonight, I invite you to indulge in something sweet, delicious, decadent, and indulgent. If you love Disney stories with happy endings and Hallmark movies with slow-burn-but-inevitable romances, you might just leave tonight with a new favorite musical!
Shelby Ferrin, Director
She Loves Me is a charmingly comedic story of mistaken identity set in a 1930s European perfumery. Feuding perfume clerks Amalia and Georg work together begrudgingly by day and write beautiful love letters to their “secret admirers” by night. Little did they know, they were writing to each other. The unlikely romance unfolds as Georg and Amalia discover the truth, but will their love continue to blossom once their identities are finally revealed?
