When The Fantasticks was first created, Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt nicknamed Act One, “Under the moonlight”, and Act Two, “Under the sun”. The show came out smack dab in the middle of the golden age of Broadway. It was first performed on a shoestring budget in a tiny theater not long after West Side Story first opened, and happened to premiere the same year that The Sound of Music won the Tony Award for Best Musical. And then it ran for 42 years, setting a worldwide record that will probably never be broken.
It’s a show that lampoons that old refrain of, “boy meets girl”, while at the same time reinforcing it. It’s a charming little fable, but it also draws upon some of the deepest and most intimate elements of relationships and personal growth. Magic happens by the light of the moon. And then under the sun, we are forced to deal with the choices we’ve made. Reality is clearer once the sun has shined on it. But that’s not the only human experience that The Fantasticks explores.
What would happen if you got exactly what you asked for? If your most intense wishes came true?
The Fantasticks shows us what happens when Matt and Luisa get exactly what they wish for and then are forced to deal with the consequences that follow. The clever plan that their fathers concoct works, but to what end? As El Gallo states, “Without a hurt, the heart is hollow.” Some of the most valuable and impactful lessons we learn in our lives come through the lens of pain, as we face the consequences of our poorer decisions.
I hope that our telling of this story resonates with you. There are no massive sets or extravagant costumes. No water features or pyrotechnics. We will ask you to use your imagination as you come along with us on this journey. I hope that you see elements of yourself and also your loved ones in the archetypes found onstage tonight. Most of all, I hope that you enjoy this simple little story of a boy, a girl, their fathers, and a wall.
The curtain is about to rise, so I will close with a few words from Puck, spoken in the closing moments of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream:
“If we shadows have offended,
Think but this, and all is mended,
That you have but slumbered here
While these visions did appear.”
Thank you for being a part of our story tonight.
Josh Richardson – Director
This whimsical, romantic story of two young lovers, Louisa and Matt, takes us on a journey where we discover that “without hurt the heart is hollow”. The meddling fathers of these two young lovers deliberately make things difficult for them in order to bring them closer together. As their relationship is taken from the soft shadows of a budding romance and into the harsh light of day, the reality of struggles and heartache is exposed and they are forced to find their own identities and strengths. With memorable songs such as “Soon its Gonna Rain”, and the timeless classic “Try to Remember”, the narrator El Gallo, who is somewhat the personification of destiny, weaves their tale of love and discovery as they at last find their strengths as a couple in times of darkness and light.

Brian has enjoyed working with the amazing production team and cast. Their hard work and imagination have brought this heartfelt story to life. Perhaps when you leave, you can try to remember that a pearl is often better than a
diamond.
Josh is so thrilled to be directing this unique show in a very special space. Previous directorial efforts in the Leishman Black Box include You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, The 39 Steps, and The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged). He’s also directed several mainstage shows here at CPT. “All my love to Kristi, Spencer, and William!”
Name: Matthew T Hewitt. Addiction: New music rabbit holes. Funny fact: Favorite band is The Cure which doesn’t really have an influence on musical theatre. Pre-show ritual: A lot of focused pacing. Theatre History: Matt has been seen in over 70 productions along the Wasatch Front. This is his 3rd show as a music director for CPT.
After four and a half years as the Technical Director for CPT, Derek has been told it’s finally time to update his bio for the program. So if you’re reading this… Thanks! He is an alumnus of the Weber State Theater Program. Derek oversees the technical aspects of all of the shows we do, including the Barlow Main Stage, Leishman Performance Hall, Academy, and rental events.
Mark is happy to be back in the Black Box again having previously managed Curious Savage & Don’t Drink the Water. He’s also stage-managed Chitty Chitty Bang Bang & Newsies across the hall. Occasionally seen on stage as well, lately, he’s working behind the scenes at PTC & SLAC. Thanks and love to his theatre family, Angie, Westley, Liam, & Abby.
Camille is thrilled about the opportunity to be Sound Designing! She’s been a sound and/or light technician for 25 consecutive productions here at CPT. She wants to thank her wonderful parents, Ron and Wendy, and her amazing boyfriend, Josh, for all their love and support! Also, a big shout out and thanks to Derek, for teaching her all about sound!
Nate has several loves in life including lights, Star Wars, animals, and collecting treasures. He has been light designing for 7 years. This will be his 60th show. He has been with CPT since 2017 and is excited to do his first light design here. He has worked for several different theaters but mostly does lights for Backstage Performing Arts.
Shannon accidentally started costuming shows when she mistakenly said yes to costuming her daughter’s junior high play and has been loving it ever since. She has costumed many shows, most recently The Not So True Tales of Robin Hood. Shannon would like to thank her husband for supporting her and letting her be creative and enjoy her passion.
Raquel’s creations, from peace pipes to teddy bears, have been seen along the Wasatch Front and in this theatre behind the concessions stand. Most of her favorites have been those historical or British pieces such as; A Man For All Seasons, Curious Savage, 1930’s Taming of the Shrew, Earnest, Enchanted April, Forever Plaid, and Farndale…. A Christmas Carol.
Jay is excited to be invited back to help with a production at CenterPoint. Jay has worked in theater since he was a teenager and still enjoys it today. He loves how each theater performance is a unique experience only shared by those involved.
Colin is excited to be back at CPT! Colin has graduated from UVU with a BFA in Theatrical Design & Production. Lighting Design credits include Cinderella and The Little Mermaid with Kaysville City. James and the Giant Peach and Urinetown with UVU. Flight: Dare to Dream as Asst. LD for Royal Caribbean Cruises & La Sylphide as Asst. LD for Atlanta Ballet.
Cinderella marks Cynthia’s 41st show on the Barlow Main Stage as well as 19 shows in the Leishman Performance Hall and is already working on her 60th overall show here at CPT. Cynthia served as the Scenic Charge Artist for Disney Channel’s High School Musical – The Series Season 2. For 8 seasons, Cynthia served as the Scenic Charge Artist at Tuacahn Amphitheatre producing scenic artwork for 26 productions.
Composer Harvey Schmidt and lyricist Tom Jones are the legendary writing team best known for shaping the American musical landscape with their 1960 hit, The Fantasticks. After its Off-Broadway opening in May 1960, it went on to become the longest-running production in the history of the American stage and one of the most frequently produced musicals in the world.
Their first Broadway show, 110 in the Shade, was revived on Broadway in a new production starring Audra MacDonald. I Do! I Do!, their two-character musical starring Mary Martin and Robert Preston, was a success on Broadway and is frequently done around the country. For several years Jones and Schmidt worked privately at their theatre workshop, concentrating on small-scale musicals in new and often untried forms. The most notable of these efforts was Celebration, which moved to Broadway, and Philemon, which won an Outer Critics Circle Award. They contributed incidental music and lyrics to the Off-Broadway play Colette starring Zoe Caldwell, then later did a full-scale musical version under the title Colette Collage. The Show Goes On, a musical revue featuring their theatre songs and starring Jones and Schmidt, was presented at the York Theatre, and Mirette, their musical based on the award-winning children’s book, was premiered at the Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut. In addition to an Obie Award and the 1992 Special Tony Award for The Fantasticks, Jones, and Schmidt were inducted into the Broadway Hall of Fame at the Gershwin Theatre, and on May 3, 1999, their ‘stars’ were added to the Off-Broadway Walk of Fame outside the Lucille Lortel Theatre. Then in 2012, Jones & Schmidt were honored by being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Truxton is excited to build for a third season at CenterPoint and to be calling the shots by designing the set. Truxton was the ATD at Tuacahn for 8 years, notably working on The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Prince of Egypt, and The Little Mermaid. He couldn’t have accomplished this without the support of his loving wife, Megan, and his five kids, with two more on the way.
Ashley has had so much fun helping create magic for this show. Thank you to the fantastic production team for the experience and collaboration.
Shelly is thrilled to be a part of the CPT family with Cinderella. She has done many things as a performer. Some of her favorites are The Wizard of Oz, Singin’ in the Rain, and being a featured soloist in the 2017 & 2019 Temple Square Concert Series. She is excited to be experiencing things from the perspective of the production team again.
