FROM THE DIRECTOR

I find it fascinating that when the children of a family get together (especially during a Holiday), no matter how old they are or what each of them have accomplished, the familiar dynamics of their youth all come back. Have you noticed? The contentions, the collaborations, the hurt, the happiness, the leaders, the followers, the vocal ones and the quiet ones.  If we don’t consciously act differently toward one another, it is very easy to fall back into old habits.

In The Lion in Winter, Henry II of England gathers his family together at Christmas 1183 following the death of his oldest son. This is not a history play. But rather a study of possible relationships and cultural dynamics surrounding an important European family.  You will likely see this family as very dysfunctional. I imagine any family that is intimately influenced by kingdoms, lands, power, intrigue, war, conspiracies, etc. on top of the regular family dynamics, would be rather difunctional and fractured.

I encourage you to look beyond the dysfunctionality of this family to the experiences and emotion beneath their actions. Hear the depth of their recollections and epiphanies. This is a family that represents the world in small. A microcosm of the world’s challenges in one family on one day. Don’t let these weighty matters cause you to over look the humor and irony of their situation. Nor the care and yes, even love that they have suppressed in order to obtain the worldly successes that each sees as their right and obligation.

Thanks for joining us and I hope you find this play as fascinating as I do.

Jansen Davis – Director

SYNOPSIS

It’s Christmas 1183 and King Henry II has invited all of his family back home, including his imprisoned wife, Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, to announce who will be his successor to the throne.  When all of the intrigue, family secrets, and good wine start flowing, jockeying for the position reaches a fever pitch.  Queen Eleanor, Princes Richard, Geoffrey, John, and King Phillipe of France all have plots and schemes to mastermind if they want to win this political game of chess.
